Framing and Composition (Part 2)

Composition means to place the elements within the shot in such a way that it looks aesthetic (Study of Beauty).

Symmetry: While it does not have to be perfect, both sides still need to look similar.

Texture: Not exclusive to art, as it can be seen by way of good lighting. An Extreme Close-up is the best way of capturing texture of something.

Repetition: Visual Repetition creates a sense of unity within the images, mainly because its all around us (e.g. colours, hues, proportion, size etc).

Monty Python’s Spamalot 2015

  • Watch the production – create notes for backstage jobs
  • Run Time – 1:48:22
  • Job: Set/Scenic Designer
  • The creation of scenery for theatrical,
  • as well as film or television productions.
  • Sets required to be 3D (3-Dimensional) in order to retain its stability.
  • Requires a degree in art (Might be possible to obtain without one)
  • Surprisingly unfunny production – butchers jokes and adds unnecessary filler.
  • The estimated filler is totalled at 18+ minuets, which greatly adds onto the run time of the original film which was 1:32:00 from beginning to end.
  • In this musical version, it takes King Arthur and his Knights till the end of the original movie (1:32:00) just to get to the scene where they are confronted by “Tim The Enchanter.”
This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is tim-the-enchanter.png
  • The singing is sub-par for such a production – though saying that it is a musical so at least the music is of a higher quality (when it wants to be).
  • Costume design is decent and very accurate to the original film (The Knights of the Round Table are especially faithful). Though, Tim The Enchanter is a bit of a letdown what with his low effort curled ram horns.
  • It should also be noted that the general plot of the musical has some exceptions to it, causing some of the scenes to become disjointed and out of chronological order. (no examples shall be given as that would take to long).

Dream A Little Dream of Me – Lyric Interpretation

(Fades in)
Stars shining bright above you –
Night breezes seem to whisper, I love you –
Birds singin’ in the sycamore trees –
Dream a little dream of me x2 –

Say nighty-night and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you’ll miss me
While I’m alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me x4

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper, I love you
Birds singin’ in the sycamore trees
Dream a little dream of me x4 (first one in an old radio)

Say nighty-night and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you’ll miss me
While I’m alone and blue as can be

The Lovely Bones Notes

  • MC = Main Character
  • GH = George Harvey
  • Dream World – Doesn’t happen in the book and thus is inaccurate.
  • Paramount Logo
  • Dreamworlds Logo
  • FILM4 Logo
  • Starts with a zoom out of a penguin in a snow globe.
  • Monologue follows – dad tells main character not to worry about the penguin because its in a “perfect world”.
  • Opening titles play.
  • MC visits a sinkhole when she notices the daughter of the houses owner called ‘Ruth Conners’ – zoom in on her face.
  • Montage plays of GH starting to construct a wooden Clubhouse (Pit) while intertwined with shots of the main character.
  • The scene then switches to the MC and her dad building and shelving a model ship in a glass bottle – cuts back to GH digging a hole.
  • The main character then goes to school – cuts just before to George Harvey staring out of a window at main character.
  • After School scene plays out, the camera cuts to an almost uninterrupted shot of MC walking home across a field at night – intertwined with clips of MC’s family preparing for dinner.
  • GH guilt trips MC into following him into the “Clubhouse” (Pit).
  • The MC’s Family begins to frantically worry about her whereabouts – cuts to MC being subsequently murdered off-screen by GH.
  • The MC’s Family becomes incredibly worried and searches the nearby town to find her, as well as calling the police to help them.
  • MC gets transported to what is essentially purgatory where she tries in vain to contact her family and sees visions of the serial killer.
  • Detectives search GH’s house, but for some reason finds nothing suspicious about the man or his house (even though they could blatantly see MC’s bracelet resting on a black box by some doll houses).
  • They didn’t even search more obvious areas like the utility room or every other room in the house for evidence.
  • In purgatory, MC finds gazebo and also note with poetry (Othello possibly)

Relevance of the snow globe: there is none. its just put in there to seem important. The afterlife (also known, apparently as the ‘In-between’) is shown as an odd place. seemingly filled with nonsensical objects that technically have nothing to do with the story. One of the (possibly newly created) character tells MC that your “not supposed to touch people”, even though in a very brief flashback, MC just runs past Ruth and doesn’t touch her hand at all.

It is started in this film adaptation that the afterlife is supposed to be Heaven, though in reality it seems to be more of a state of “Purgatory” for the main character and other children like her. As previously stated, random objects from within the prologue just happen to randomly appear in the In-between, their only reason for existing being to make the audience feel “smart” when they show up.

An example of this are icicles that show up in the In-between, specifically during the summer that’s only significance is to kill GH (The Murder) at the very end of the film where it falls on his shoulder which causes him to trip over the edge of a snow covered cliff. Another example is a gazebo that shows up a few times in the film, that’s mainly linked to MC.

This is because its is meant to symbolise MC’s hope that technically cant be touch because its in purgatory and thus is ethereal in nature. However, for some inexplicable reason, it starts to crumble when when the dad is being operated on. Also MC can see vision of past victims killed by GH, also conveniently with information about how when and where they died for reasons that are never explained. And shock of all horrors, it turns out that Lee Aug happened to be one of the victims too.

Moving back to the rules of the In-Between for a moment. its said that near the end of the movie, murder victims that have unfinished business are sent here until they have revenge on their killers. This would be all well and good, but as MC is being sent to heaven, GH has just disposed of a safe with her decapitated remains inside into the sinkhole before making his escape undiscovered. And to add insult to injury, the killer is taken out by an icicle lightly hitting his shoulder which causes him to trip backwards down a cliff.

Podcast/Dramatic Reading Evaluation

Above is a chronological list off all the parts of my Podcast/Dramatic Reading I have recorded separately so that I can stitch them together into a longer and more complete version. Each part of the list corresponds to 1-2 paragraphs of my script, including a small section for the intro and outro.

Overview of Adobe Audition Software

This a screenshot of the entire podcast in post production, the larger sections of the waveform at the start and the end representing both the intro and the outro as well as their respective duration.

Image of Level Tab

The ‘Level’ tab below the waveforms, allows me to observe the audio levels and judge whether or not I am required to lower the sound volume.

As a reference for future podcasts, I will again record every paragraph of my script one at a time, as this allowed me before to quickly re-record a line or section that I may have messed up on. It was very useful when I went into pre-production, as I was simply able to locate the sound files and input them in pre-production (including intro and outro) before exporting them to SoundCloud in a completed state.

What I will not be doing again however, is picking loud intros and outros, as without the gradual fade in and out, they just seem to appear out of nowhere and startle the listener. this was not the desired effect, as I wanted the intro to slowly build an atmosphere for the listener to get hooked into the podcast.

Waveform of my Podcasts Intro Theme

What went well with my podcast, would have to be my delivery of the story to the audience, as I tried to sound deep and mysterious without turning so husky that I became impossible to listen to.

What went wrong with my podcast, (other than the loud intros and outros which I’ve already stated) would have to be the amount of times I messed up on a line or stumbled and stammered through a paragraph.

Image of H1 Zoom Recorder

This is the unfortunate problem with my method as once I extracted the files from the recording device, (H1 Zoom Recorder)I had to go through the pain staking process of chronologically reorganising them until they made the story I was trying to tell.

I believe I communicated my topic of “Fantasy Horror” to my audience very well, as I took care in making my words clear and audible so that everyone could understand what I was saying.

‘Audio Only’ was not a significant limitation to getting my message across, as with my dramatic reading, it allowed the audience/listener to visualise in their mind what the characters looked like, how they were portrayed, what was going on in the story ETC. This was added upon with the inclusion of atmospheric noises and ambience, helping the listener to get immersed into the kingdom of “Lothrum” and its frozen maritime city of “Nealport”.

Visual Representation of the City of Nealport

I thoroughly enjoyed working on media production, as it allowed me to further articulate my creative skills and also helped me learn how to record, produce and upload a successful podcast.
